Sometimes it is the desire to do the right thing by our loved ones that sees people fall out of employment, as was the case for Gavin, an Indigenous man in North Queensland.
Gavin’s decision to move to a location where his family could settle down meant he had been out of work for over 12 months. He finally landed in Bowen, in the Whitsundays area, where he came into contact with CoAct Service Partner, Community Solutions.
Gavin was paired with Employment Consultant Zanniece Bickey, who discovered Gavin was keen to regain his financial independence by returning to the cleaning industry in which he had vast prior experience. Despite his skills, Gavin was having difficulty finding an employer willing to give him a chance.

Adding to Gavin’s job search challenges was the fact he had no access to transport and was getting to and from his appointments at Community Solutions on his pushbike. Despite this, Gavin was always on time and very enthusiastic at his appointments.
After meeting Workforce Solutions Consultant Jenna Cameron, what she noticed about Gavin was that he was reliable and quickly responded to everything that was asked of him. He also had job references from previous employers that confirmed he was a great employee and a very hard worker.

Jenna helped Gavin to update his resume and then referred him to a brokered job at Integrabuild, a building and demolition services business located in Bowen. Jenna and the Community Solutions team have a strong working relationship with Integrabuild and it was this mutual trust and respect that meant they were able to secure a job for Gavin.
Before he was able to start in the new position, Gavin was required to complete a government building induction course and training including the employer’s online HR system and an accredited safe removal of asbestos course. Jenna and the team arranged financial and practical support for Gavin to undertake the training and it wasn’t long before Gavin had secured permanent employment with Integrabuild.
After just six weeks on the job, Gavin’s employer said: “He’s doing so well we are ready to rename our first-born son after him!” For Gavin, the financial security of the job meant he was not only able to provide for his family, but he also purchased a car, solving his transportation woes.

Gavin has remained employed with Integrabuild for over 6 months, and has now been promoted. He is a leading hand in charge of overseeing the cleaning of the sites – a tremendous responsibility but also an indication of how highly he is thought of by his employer. Integrabuild continues to work with Community Solutions for their recruitment needs.
